Traumatic Brain Injury
Georgia Traumatic Brain Injury
TBI is a medical shorthand for traumatic brain injury, a frequent consequence of a blow to the head. There are several different types of traumatic brain injury in Georgia.
Concussion
A concussion is considered to be a minor traumatic brain injury. The brain is jarred inside the skull during a blow to the head, and the resulting traumatic brain injury causes the neurons of the brain to become disorganized. Disorientation and discomfort usually follow. Although these symptoms are often temporary, there can be lasting brain damage that is not diagnosed immediately. Concussions should be taken as seriously as any other traumatic brain injury.
Intracranial Hematoma or Hemorrhage (ICH)
Hematoma means the presence of blood in a space where it does not belong. There are several classifications of hematoma in brain injuries:
- Epidural hematoma
- Subdural Hematoma
- Contusion or intracerebral hematoma
Depending on the volume of bleeding, epidural or subdural hematomas may be stopped with surgical intervention. However, the neurological consequences of your Atlanta traumatic brain injury may be irreversible. Intracerebral hematomas are the most serious brain injuries involving bleeding, and usually result in coma or death.
Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI)
The most devastating brain injury is DAI, which stands for diffuse axonal injury. Axons are groups of neurons, also known as white matter. Diffuse axonal injury means that the white matter is stretched or torn throughout the majority of the brain. This severe brain injury typically results in coma or a persistent vegetative state.
